Crossplay is something that many thought would never happen. Go back a decade or so and you’ll see why. It was something that players wanted but it seemed like a far-fetched dream at that time. That dream is almost a reality now. Almost.
With the rise of multiplayer games and competitive gaming, over time Crossplay has been started to be implemented in games. Rocket League is one game which has Crossplay, another game that has it is Fortnite. Fortnite even allows mobile players to play with the console or PC friends which is not seen too often. However, while all the other platforms can play with each other, PlayStation players can only play with PC and Mobile gamers. This is mainly because PlayStation is not comfortable with Crossplay from a business point of view. At IFA 2018, Sony’s CEO Kenichiro Yoshida stated:
On cross-platform, our way of thinking is always that PlayStation is the best place to play.
He further went on to say, “Fortnite, I believe, partnered with PlayStation 4 is the best experience for users, that’s our belief. But actually, we already opened some games as cross-platform with PC and some others, so we decide based on what is the best user experience. That is our way of thinking for cross-platform.” Not everyone is a fan of this stance though as people want to be able to play with their friends who are on a different platform. Xbox’s Corporate Vice President Mike Ybarra took to Twitter to state his dismay with PlayStation’s decision.
“[Sony still] isn’t listening to gamers. All games should be cross-play and progression with the right input flexibility and gamer options.”
PlayStation blocks players’ Fortnite Account from being used on the Nintendo Switch which is another odd move and feels out of place in this day and age where cross-platform is slowly growing. The last generation it Xbox who didn’t want to implement crossplay and this generation it is Sony. We will continue to report on this story as the saga continues but we can only hope that proper crossplay isn’t too far from being implemented.
