Battle Royale Makes Its Way To FIFA 19 With The New Survival Mode

With almost every other major Video Game release coming up with its own take on the Battle Royale Genre, it only made sense that FIFA would have one of its own. And you know what, it’s actually an interesting spin on the traditional Battle royale style.

The Survival Mode in FIFA 19 is a new game mode which adds this Battle Royale twist, and here’s how it works – Each time a user scores a goal, a random player from the scoring club is removed (excluding the goalkeeper) to create a challenge for the player with a score advantage.

This essentially puts pressure on both the winning and the losing team, and raises the stakes significantly.

We’ll be playing the demo for FIFA 19 releasing tomorrow, 13 September, and will have more to say once we spend some time with the game.

FIFa 19 releases on September 25th for the PS4, Xbox One and PC.

PUBG Million Concurrent Player Streak Ends

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds aka PUBG has started a Battle Royale game craze that is still going on. As a game that was released on Steam, various statistics related to PUBG can be seen via SteamDB. One such stat for PUBG has been the concurrent number of players playing at once.

For 366 days, PUBG had over a million concurrent players playing the game at its peak in a day. It is absolutely insane to imagine that the game is so popular that it was able to hold the streak for a whole year. While it failed to do so on 10th September 2018 when it hit only 960,263 players at its peak, PUBG is still one of the most played games on Steam at the moment.

It would be interesting to see how PUBG Mobile and Fortnite fare in this regard but that seems like it won’t be possible since neither games are available on Steam or have a metric that shows peak player count during the day.

EA Refuses To Comply With Belgium’s Gambling Laws, Under Criminal Investigation

Thanks to the epic fiasco surrounding Star Wars Battlefront 2′s loot boxes, governments around the world seem to be tightening their grip on how microtransactions are handled in the games. Earlier this year, the Belgian government declared certain loot boxes to be gambling, causing big names like 2K Games, Valve and Activision Blizzard to remove loot boxes from their titles in the country.

However, EA plans to stand its ground, refusing to remove loot boxes from one of their most popular games, FIFA. In April, the publisher said, “We strongly believe that our games are developed and implemented ethically and lawfully around the world, and take these responsibilities very seriously. We care deeply that our players are having a fun and fair experience in all of our games, and take great care to ensure each game is marketed responsibly, including in compliance with regional ratings standards. We welcome the dialogue with Minister Geens on these topics, as we do not agree that our games can be considered as any form of gambling.”

Additionally, EA also states that the loot boxes in FIFA 18 cannot be considered as gambling because the players always receive specified number of items, and the publisher doesn’t authorize any way to cash out or sell any item or virtual currency in return for real money.

Belgium’s Gaming Commission considers these loot boxes as a form of gambling as the players do not know which items they are going to receive when they purchase a loot box, making it an illegal game of chance. Hence, EA may now be facing a criminal investigation, under the Brussel’s public prosecutor’s office. If proved that they’ve been involved in perpetuating gambling among the community (including minors), the company will be liable to pay a hefty penalty.

NVIDIA Delays RTX 2080 & RTX 2080Ti Reviews, Raises Concerns About Performance

We’re all eager to see how the new NVIDIA RTX GPUs perform, specially given how much they have touted the new Ray Tracing tech and 4K performance. However, it still remains to be seen if all this talk holds any water, and independent reviews and benchmarks are the only way to know. And now we are hearing rumblings of reviewers facing trouble getting their review units, and hence they will not have enough time to get a proper review out in time.

In response to this, NVIDIA has pushed back the dates for the reviews to the 19th of September, just a day before the GPUs are available at retail. This has raised some concerns about how much confidence NVIDIA has in their upcoming RTX cards. It might simply be a case of drivers not being ready and supplies being short, but given that this isn’t their first launch, one would imagine that they would be better prepared.

Also, last time when NVIDIA was launching the GTX 10 series cards, we had a lot more benchmarks available prior to release. This time all we have so far, apart from the marketing spiel, is this comparison chart:

Well, we’ll know either ways in another 10 days.
