#PlayerStories – Fighting the Odds & Following Her Passion W/ Shagufta Iqbal

With the rising value of eSports industry in India, more and more players are making it to the hall of fame. It is needless to say that female participation is also increasing in this arena, diminishing the barriers and obstacles with their great feats of achievement. As a matter of fact, a research carried out by Sportskeeda shows that 32% gamers in India are women. This is just the first step of a one long journey taken up by female eSports players to elevate their status in this line

Today, we present you a woman who is one of the most proactive trekker of this expedition of reaching the hall of fame, Shagufta Iqbal. Being a hard core CS:GO gamer, she has represented the nation in multiple eSports events which gives many a feeling of pride and at the same time makes many gaze at her success.

Let’s have a look at her journey!

 Plunge into Gaming

“My name is Shagufta Iqbal but I am more popularly known as ‘xyaa’ in the community. I am a full-time Software engineer and part-time streamer. I have been a gamer all my life. What started as a hobby became a very vital part of my life, so much that I am hoping to be able to do this full-time. Apart from gaming, I absolutely love cats.

My earliest memory of gaming has to be me playing Adventure Island or Duck Hunt on my console with my sister.

Right now, I am obsessed with PUBG. I also play alot of Overwatch when I’m not playing PUBG. Also, trying to get the hang of Fortnite but building is just too hard.

I used to watch alot of twitch streamers. I got inspired and started my own youtube channel but that didn’t go too well so I stopped. Later I was approached by GamingMonk to do a casual stream on their youtube. That was probably the best decision of my life. I had a lot of fun and once the stream was over, I just couldn’t wait to stream again. So I created a twitch and started streaming and there was only going up, everybody who came in to watch was so supportive and warm! I was making friends through streaming and I really loved it. I stream almost daily now”

Balancing Work & Passion

“Finding time to stream after working 12 hours a day gets really tough! Juggling between work and gaming puts alot of stress on you. I used to push myself alot before by working insane hours and then streaming everyday which became too hectic for me and I ended up taking long breaks because I got very tired. From my experience I’ve learnt that you can’t do everything at once, you need to give yourself some off time so your mind can refresh. So I do take 1 day or 2 day breaks from streaming every week so that I can rest and freshen up my brain”

Message to other girls in the field

Yes gender is sort of a big deal and girls do get alot of flak just for being girls. Remarks lashing preferential treatment in gaming are bound to put you down. Keep your head up & don’t let it bother you.

You need to look past that and keep doing what you’re doing because in the end, it doesn’t matter what everyone says as long as it makes you happy.

Vision of eSports in India

The onset of Optic Gaming in India does look very promising for the eSports scene in the country. India is finally getting recognition. There are also alot of big brands investing in esports in the country. With every passing year, the prizepool and the number of events is increasing. The future does look bright. With such remarkable talent India indeed has a bright future, the only way is up. Despite the shilly-shally around gaming, I feel the field has a lot of potential, take a plunge and lay down your path!

#BreakingTheMyth – Akanksha Sachan on Being a Girl Gamer

Gaming as a profession has been constantly looked down in the country. Gaming in general has had it’s fair issues of struggle, often regarded as a hobby to fritter away with one’s time, a get-away from studies causing poor grades. NOT TRUE! (95% in Boards W/ Dark Souls & Witcher 3) Luckily, to our favour, times have changed.

From what was deemed as “just another hobby”, a time killer, is now a full-time job. People are making millions off it, be it players or organisers. Women are advancing into Gaming/eSports which was initially perceived as a male exclusive avenue. Let’s have a look at Akanksha’s Journey as she breaks the stereotype surrounding girl gamers in India.

Q. Tell us something about yourself?

“Primarily I am a Cosplayer. I was in love with gaming because all gaming characters had amazing costumes and that made me admire them. I have been Cosplaying since 2010 and that is partly the reason I got into fashion designing. It was gaming. It was the elaborate designs that made me want to be those characters that I saw on screen. I remember my first costume. The first time I saw myself in the mirror; I was exceptionally proud of what I had done

For most of my time in gaming, I remained casual. I played more to learn about game characters and not to compete or to take it too seriously. Cosplay was still my primary focus. The played MOBA’s such as LOL and FPS games from time to time. But at that time I didn’t take gaming too seriously.

Nearly a year ago, I got myself a new Gaming PC . And I guess that’s when things have changed the most. I now had to tools to take gaming more seriously; and the best part was that I didn’t have to compromise. I have a team and an amazing boss that supports my career as a Cosplayer.

Slowly but steadily I’ve grown as a gamer and things are looking bright from here on out. I’m sure that there will be more challenges ahead as there are today but now I’m confident that I can face them”

Q. When did you start gaming?

“I got my first computer in 2008 and I guess that’s when I played my first game(not counting those Cassettes day on Gameboys). I still remember getting to know the controls while playing ‘Project IGI’. I was hooked. I think for someone to be passionate about gaming, you have to start young. That is the time when it can really leave an impact; as it did with me.”

Q. What all games do you play?

I like to play PUBG , Tekken and other variety of games but I love  ‘League of Legends’.

Q. When did you start streaming?

Mostly it was through popular demands of my followers that repeatedly asked me to do this. So I gave it a chance and it was very well received. Thanks to all of that, I think I’m going to explore more of what i can do in streaming.

Q. Have you faced any difficulties pursuing gaming as your passion?

Most of the difficulties that I have faced have been monetary, I didn’t have much support from my family but they were never against it. They supported me as a Cosplayer, even when they didn’t really know what it was. I make a decent amount of money now and I’m surrounded with people that support me. Actually I would call myself lucky.

Q. Your journey has been truly inspirational, what advice would you like to give to budding girl gamers?

To anyone who’s looking to make it in the gaming industry; just make sure that you surround yourself with positive energy. There are a lot of things and people that would for some reason pull you down. We all love to watch a train wreck but make sure that you’re not such a spectacle. Be known for good; and at the same time be ready to face the worst.

Gaming is supposed to be progressive and accepting of everyone but unfortunately that is not the case once you take the first step into the deep end of the pool. I had to face a lot of this until I met up with the right people, people that genuinely want to have fun and get better at gaming at the same time. Even after all the adversities, I got through it & I can only see good things lined-up for the future.

Q. eSports is growing worldwide, what do you think about the eSports situation in our country?

In my time working with Acro, I’ve been able to see the growth that gaming industry has seen in India. The last five years in particular have been very constructive; and we’re all very certain that the numbers will keep on improving. What everyone needs to understand is that Rome wasn’t built in a day; things will take time.

FIFA 19

Die Meister, Die Besten, Les grandes équipes,The champions. *Champions League Theme*

I can’t speak for the rest of you but when the trailer kicked off, I certainly had goosebumps. We’ve waited for this for years now. After a 10 year wait, EA has officially acquired the official license for UEFA Champions League from it’s age old competitors Konami (PES).

Right into action, Ronaldo catches a hold of the ball & unleashes his magic on the pitch, followed by Kevin De Bruyne, Neymar & many others, we see a lot of fancy goals & shimmies. “Champions Rise, Be A Champion”

  1. Active Touch System – Giving you much more control on the ball & options for various exits to beat the defender inducing unpredictability which actually contributes to having a much more realistic gameplay
  2. New tactics & mentalities from the touch of a button
  3. NO PARK THE BUSSSSSSSSSSS
  4. Timed Finishing – Goodbye to spamming the shoot button, won’t work this year. Thank you EA!
Watch the trailer below to catch a glimpse to what the game offers, we’ll update you as we find out new features.

CyberPunk

A combination of a RPG, first person shooter and an Open world game. CD Projekt Red‘s Cyberpunk 2077 can be described as a “narrative-driven First Person RPG”. It takes place in an alternate-reality version of Northern California, in a sprawling mega-city filled with augmented humans. You can choose your character’s gender, pick a look, and assign skill points to better suit your playstyle. But Cyberpunk 2077 also goes a step further, and lets you craft your own simple backstory. You can choose from childhood events that shaped your character, and these in turn will influence how people perceive you in the game. You can also upgrade your skills and physical stats as you go on with your storyline.

World of CyberPunk 2077

Particularly impressive were the citizens, who all moved about naturally, as if they had their own lives going on. CD Projekt Red says that each non-playable character has their own day / night cycle, so that they behave differently depending on the time of day. They can also behave differently depending on what you do in the game.

Cyberpunk 2077 is coming to the PC, PS4, and Xbox One, though there’s no word on a release date yet.

Shadow of Tomb Raider

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is an upcoming action-adventure video game developed by Eidos Montréal in conjunction with Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix. It is the third entry of the rebooted Tomb Raider series and a sequel to 2015’s Rise of the Tomb Raider.

The story takes place after the events of Rise of the Tomb Raider. The protagonist Lara Croft is an archaeologist on an expedition to Latin America looking for a Mayan relic which has a connection to her late father. Trinity, a paramilitary organization dedicated to investigating the supernatural, seek the relic to reshape the world. During the expedition Lara sets off a Mayan apocalypse and she attempts to save the world.  There are numerous adjustments made to gameplay, which is otherwise identical to Rise. The controls for swimming have been completely revised, as Lara is now able to hold her breath underwater for a longer period of time due to the introduction of air pockets. She also gains the ability to rappel down a cliff using a rope. Stealth becomes an important part of the game, with Lara being able to disengage from combat when she escapes from enemies’ line of sight. Like its predecessors, the game allows players to hunt wild animals, craft materials using the resources collected, solve puzzles and explore optional tombs. Shadow of Tomb Raider is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox one and PC on 14th September 2018.

Anthem

An eye catching 3-D snippet at the kick off of the EA Play 2018 conference was of Bioware & EA’s collaborated development “Anthem”, a Sci-Fi action role playing game which already left a pleasing impression back in E3 2017 with its superbly sophisticated yet gorgeous environment. The game focuses on the storyline of how a natural phenomenon threatens to wipe out the entire mankind and how a faction by the name of “Freelancers” struggle from keeping things from going south. The game is set to release in February 2019 which seems to be a decade long wait but like the saying goes, ‘patience always lead to sweeter results’.

Jump Force

It might be true that ‘Marvel Avengers: Infinity War’ was “the most ambitious crossover”, but “Jump Force”, a revelation at the Microsoft E3 2018, surely knocked the socks off for Marvel. A new generation all-star brawler developed by Bandai Namco, brings the major characters from the most beloved works in the Anime & Manga world in an arena, which is, prima facie, based in the United States. A confirmed release date hasn’t been announced yet but it’s for sure that the Manga & Anime fanatics will have to wait till the next year.

Forza Horizon 4

Developer Playground Games have always impressed the racing video games fanatics with each of their Forza’s franchise till date and the developers, now acquired by Microsoft, have hit the right note this time as well with their upcoming release “Forza Horizon 4” According to GameSpot, “During a meeting at E3 2018 this week, Playground’s Ben Penrose spoke about how Forza Horizon 4 offers the “biggest paradigm shift” since the Forza Horizon series began back in 2012.” ‘Seasons’, the new gameplay mode offered in Forza Horizon 4, will be this franchise’s ace card apart from the beautifully rendered seasons in Britain. Forza 4 is expected to roll out this fall.

Player Stories – Lokmanyu’s Path To Glory & Present Day eSports

Delhi has endowed us with exceptional players, who have shown their remarkable talent time to time & with consistency, in a setting which is constantly referred as one of the toughest regions in our domestic FIFA circuit. Lokmanyu definitely tops the list, a 22 year old eSports Athlete & Footballer from the heart of the city.

With just a year into pursuing the game professionally, he made his name to the top & conquered the scene.

Humble beginnings!

Though what may seem like an overnight success, Lokmanyu has had his fair share of struggles, after struggling for a year without being able to get past the initial rounds in Tournaments, he had his major breakthrough after winning the GamingMonk FIFA Championship Delhi & there was no turning back, bagging more than a 20 Tournaments he now leads the pack to leading competitions in India.

We caught a hold of Lokmanyu at a recent event in Delhi, here are some insights & bits about the conversation we had with him.

  1.  Let’s begin with your introduction. Tell us a bit about yourself?
” My name is Lokmanyu Chaturvedi, I’m 22 years old and I belong from the capital of our country. I’m a huge FIFA enthusiast. Few years into the game in what was just a hangout game to settle the age old club rivalries, it became my passion. I love playing Football & have been pursuing it at a semi-professional level “
  2.  Alright, so Lokmanyu can you describe your overall experience playing the tournaments at the portal over these months?
“So my journey on the Gaming Monk eSports portal started with me being one of the very first players to sign up and experience first hand the idea, the whole concept of an eSports portal and the experience was absolutely thrilling. The way the tournaments were scheduled actually gave me an idea about how I’ll spend my time other than my working hours. In fact I was the one who won the very first Silver series tournament against one of the top most FIFA players of this country. First win lead to many more and the reason behind me winning about 11 tournaments on the portal now is because Monk provides you with the Pro Points tournament that helps you practice almost on a daily basis. In a nutshell, the portal is probably the best opportunity for all the aspiring e-sports gamers to showcase their talent”
  3. What are your views on the current situation of eSports in our country?
“The current situation is really difficult to explain as far as my knowledge. Some people are taking a massive effort to make his industry grow but the government needs to support this cause without which it’ll just be another passion going down the drains. Games like CS and DOTA have been at the top in Indian e-Sports but FIFA needs a big platform and I really wish to contribute to making it a success”
  4. The competition is immense in FIFA amongst Indian pros’. How do you deal with this statement every time you sit for a tournament game?
“For me it’s all about your mental approval towards the game. If you’re mentally prepared to win a game and as a pro you are definitely equipped with the skill set, you’ll excel no matter what. As far as the competition is concerned, indeed there are so many great gamers it’s very difficult to compete against them, It’s always crucial to learn from a loss against a good player, I think that is the key to use the competition and turn it into your own success”

Player Stories – Saransh Jain’s Rise to Fame & Present Day eSports!

Saransh Jain, a 17 year old FIFA eSports Professional from Pune, broke into the scene when he won the first GamingMonk Championship Series in Pune. He immediately became a known figure in the FIFA scene, if you haven’t heard his name yet, you probably haven’t faced him or seen him play, we personally did & it didn’t end  well (3-0)

He’s looked upon as one of the most talented players the country has to offer. After dominating the offline scene he immediately stepped into the online realm & made his mark there as well, bagging more than 60,000 INR over a period of 3 months (Both online & offline) & consistently topping the monthly leaderboards. Easier said than done!

Let’s take a closer look into his journey.

Q.1) Let’s begin with your introduction. Tell us a bit about yourself?
A.1) “My name is Saransh Jain, I am 17 years old and I belong to Pune. I started playing FIFA Tournaments on the portal in December 2017.”

Q.2) Alright, so Saransh can you describe your overall experience playing the tournaments at the portal over these months?
A.2) “It’s been an amazing journey so far. I have had a really good experience playing against some of the top eSports players in the country, each having a unique style of play, I started with a free trial on the portal, my first tournament being a 1v1 Silver Series. I didn’t have enough confidence back then to actually go out and win it, but I somehow managed to. One thing led to another and I eventually finished third in the December leader board. The very fact that some of the best players compete on this portal and I bagged the 3rd position amongst them gave me a motivation boost. Despite the fact that I lacked enough experience since I had just started and most of my competitors were regular players and had years of experience, I decided to grind it out and aimed to become the best! I started playing all the tournaments, Bronze Series, Silver Series, FUT. All these really helped me in becoming better and better with every passing day and eventually making me the eSports player I am.”

Q.3 Well that was truly one hell of a journey, apart from money you’re also earning bragging rights from these tournaments, what would you like to say about that?
A.3) “I never began with the intention of earning money. I started because I’ve always loved to compete in gaming tournamen

ts. The cash prizes which I received was just an icing on the cake & makes me keep at it. Recognition is something every eSports player hopes for, so it’s always a plus”

Q.4) What are your opinions on the current situation of eSports industry in India?
A.4) “People in India don’t realise the importance of eSports, its potential is really undervalued at the moment and I think it will take few more years for it to reach its peak, but if you’re a good player and can back yourself up, there’s a lot of potential to be uncovered along with growth in the field .”

Q.5) What is your parents’ viewpoint on your participation in these tournaments?
A.5) “I’m lucky that my parents are very supportive. When they saw me winning tournaments, their faith in me and their support increased a lot, they support this hobby of mine which is now my passion, they take it in a very positive way, breaking the myth centred around eSports or Gaming in general”

Q.6) Alright. So before we end this, do you have any message for your fellow eSports players?
A.6) “I would like to advise them to start now, if they believe that they have the potential a when it comes to gaming! I recommend everyone to gain experience playing on the portal and who knows, they can soon become the best! It’s time for the young people to come out and shimmer, a lot of new faces are coming up & with the infrastructure which GamingMonk is actively trying to bring for our players, the dream isn’t too far”

E3 2018, Sony has set the bar high unbinding it’s top acclaimed games.

For the past few years we’ve seen PlayStation put up a great show when it comes to delivering triple A’s, this year wasn’t any different.

Blockbuster titles from  leading developers like Naughty Dogs (The makers behind Last of us), Hideo Kojima etc really makes it a bad time to own an Xbox! To be honest I was always an Xbox fan but to my luck I got my hands on God of War & I just can’t go back, PlayStation never fails to impress when it comes to exclusives.

Here are our top picks from the conference.

Last of Us 2

The conference kicked off with Naughty Dog’s famed classic, Last of Us, only if the first part wasn’t good enough, they’ve come up with the sequel. The trailer starts off with Ellie W/ her girlfriend at a party & skip to 30 seconds & it’s a flashback to killing a bunch of people & surviving her way through. Stealth centred gameplay with ground breaking graphics in the dark lighted environment truly makes it a one of kind experience.

Spider-man

Marvel’s spider-man provides us with a new thrill into the world of danger, It will cover both the Peter Parker and Spider-Man aspects of the character, set in the modern day New York City, the trailer starts off with Spider-man jumping right into action, after a prison outbreak & stumbles on Electro, Rhine & Scorpion, juggling his way through them to face all 5 main enemies as he gets his back against the wall. The action-adventure includes a lot of fighting, the combat is compelling & provides a unique experience, abilities include web slinging and wall-crawling as well as new gameplay elements, one of which will be the ability to traverse using parkour. The game is set for a release on 7th September, 2018.

Death Stranding

Produced by the industry’s very own Hideo Kojima, the father of survival horror, the terror was unleashed in the live reveal at E3. We’re as confused as anyone else but the trailer gives us more insight as to what the game has to offer which includes an invisible creature who roams around freely in the unknown world. Starring Norman Reedus, the protagonist sets out to explore the world with a body hanging entrapped in a bag pack. The more I try to make sense of the game, the confusing it gets. Please watch the trailer & come back to it. Pheww!

Control

From the makers of Quantum Break & Max Payne, Control is a time-control game, players will take the role of Jesse Faden, who becomes the new director of the “Bureau of Control. The trailer includes a lot of action on similar grounds at par with Quantum Break where we saw time control as a ability to counter your enemies & a lot of slo-mo shooting. Watch the trailer to find out more.
