DreamHack Mumbai: Recipe For Disaster

DreamHack Mumbai was the first time an event with a big international name had an event of such a scale in India. However, things might not have been as expected from an event carrying such a big name so let’s take a look at DreamHack Mumbai.

DreamHack has been known to have large events filled with energy, smooth operations and the best experience for gamers and participants. Sadly, this was not the case for DreamHack Mumbai which had its fair share of issues that hampered the experience. Let’s start with the esports part of it.

While DreamHack has usually been an event that has been PC centric, this one was a little different. The focus was more on Mobile Games like PUBG Mobile and not games usually played at esports events. Furthermore, the misorganisation of the tournaments led to teams leaving before the end of the tournament because of delays in match timings which went on till late into the night.

Our colleague who attended the event as a Streamer had quite a few grievances about the PC that was provided and the Internet. The Legendary Gamer ticket which costed Rs 15k featured a “Gaming Rig” which had a GTX 750Ti GPU, a 4-year-old mid-range GPU. The Internet was not up to standards at all, disconnects were frequent which led to a lot of dropped frames in streams or the stream straight up dying.

A lot of people came to side with DreamHack stating that this is the way the internet is in India which is not an excuse for such a big event. Not to mention that there are ISPs out there which provide stable and fast internet. The tables and chairs provided were not up to standard, especially for a place where most of the people would be sitting and playing.

Some tickets got you vouchers for food but the food itself was marked up by a lot and was expensive so for students and youngsters attending the event on their own, it would not have made sense to get food from there.

Now let’s talk about something that was brought to limelight by Rishi from Gadgets360 who reported that DreamHack Mumbai was not using legitimate consoles for their Retro Gaming Zone. While most DreamHack events use the actual consoles, it seems that here they were using clones of NES console. Rishi reached out to DreamHack and Nodwin and got this response from Akshat Rathee, CEO and Founder of Nodwin:

“You ask and you ask again, and you keep asking till the time either someone says ‘no’ or says ‘okay if it’s just a community thing, go for it. The fact that it is for the community, the fact that it is something which is there, it helps their brand. I’m not monetising any of those, it’s not a commercial license. It’s not like there’s a coin-operated machine that I’m going and taking any kind of a revenue from them.”

Courtesy: Gadgets360

“It is an emulator — Open Internet Project has gone and talked about it and, Creative Commons is a great example to go ahead and talk about it, this is not about licensing. This is about building this [Dreamhack Mumbai], and if they tell me tomorrow not to do it, I won’t”

They further stated that they were using Raspberry Pis for emulation which doesn’t seem to be the case as seen from the image taken from Gadgets360. Mr. Rathee also states that they are not monetizing it but the only way to gain access to the consoles is by buying a ticket which starts at Rs 500. They also advertised it on their website so this whole Retro Zone seems very fishy and is pretty much Piracy since they don’t own the console or the games. Not a good showing for an event with such a huge brand name attached to it.

Visitors of the event were also not happy with the flash sales for tickets which offered discounts of up to 70% a few days before the start of the event. This left people who had purchased the ticket beforehand frustrated as they had bought the ticket for full price. Not to mention, Comic-Con Mumbai attendants also had access to DreamHack with their ticket and according to the report from Gadgets360, the organisers were also letting in those who had made purchases at a nearby food court.

Now let’s talk about entertainment. There were 4 stand-up comedians and 6 DJs. Was this really necessary for an event with the main focus on celebrating video games and the community? The event was lacking in a lot of areas so would it not have been better to use that money to strengthen parts of the core experience like the seating, the internet, and to get even more personalities?

Courtesy: Dreamhack India FB

The event wasn’t all bad. Fans got to meet their favourite streamers, personalities and got to watch some of their favourite teams in action. Many people got to witness their first large-scale gaming event which will help pave the way for other events that come along after this. However, this was still much left to be desired.

People have taken to social media to air their grievances but have been shut down by others because “They should be happy with what they’re getting and should be thankful about a big brand name coming to India”. That’s not the attitude to have and that would just further lower the standards of future events because organizations will feel that people are satisfied with the bare minimum.

India has a huge gaming community which is slowly coming together and if we don’t raise our voices to help make our community better then there won’t be progress and growth. So share your concerns and your praise, talk about it but don’t stay quiet. Let us know your thoughts about the event and how your experience was at Dreamhack Mumbai.

Cyberpunk 2077 Is Now Playable From Start To Finish

Cyberpunk 2077 has been in development for what seems like a really long time now but we’re getting ever so close to whenever it’s release date will be. In what is a major milestone, the game is now completely playable from start to finish.

While it is entirely playable from start to finish, it is missing assets and hasn’t been playtested which means that there are going to be quite a lot of bugs in a game of this scale. However, as the producer of the game, Richard Borzymowski said, it is quite a critical step in the development process to see the everything come together. Alongside this wonderful news, Cyberpunk 2077’s Gamescom demo has a few good surprises.

While the E3 Demo lacked nighttime footage it was done on purpose. The devs wanted to push themselves to make a City that not only looked good and cyberpunk in the night time but one that felt the same even in the daytime. Now that they had proved their point, their Gamescom trailer ends with Night City being shown at night. We also saw a new weapon, a Katana that has its own EMF that can deflect bullets which is as cool as it sounds. Players can also pick their gender, appearance, and backstory from the beginning, which is somewhat like how it was in Mass Effect as players can also fill in details about their life lives and any life-changing events.

Cyberpunk 2077’s hype train has been speeding up ever since the E3 2018 trailer and we can’t wait to see what CDPR has in store for us next.

We’ll be at Gamescom 2018, covering the show, checking out games, both on the floor and behind closed doors about which you can read here. No New Assassin’s Creed Game Coming In 2019, Ubisoft To Focus On More DLCs

Assassin’s Creed as a series starting to feel like it was losing it’s “oomph” after it became a yearly game with fans of the series feeling disappointed at the fact that the games felt rehashed. Ubisoft took a year-long break before releasing Assassin’s Creed Origins change up the formula.

Assassin’s Creed Origins was quite successful and did help reinvent the series but after the announcement of Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, many felt that Ubisoft was going back to a yearly cycle of releasing Assassin’s Creed games.  At GamesCom 2018, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot had this to say “On Assassin’s, we had a game [in 2018] and we have one this year, but we are not going to have a full-fledged Assassin’s next year. It’s just because the team were working separately, so we have two games now, one year after the other. But next year you’re not going to have a fully fledged one.”

While this can lead people to believe that there might be some sort of spin-off, he further confirmed that it would not be the case. They seem to want to push content for Odyssey as they did with Assassin’s Creed Origins which did add a lot of cool things over time. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey launches on October 5 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC and is set in Ancient Greece. This is the first game in the Assassin’s Creed series that lets you choose to play as either a man or a woman. How this will influence the story and lore is yet to be seen but it’s safe to say that fans should be excited.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds v1.0 for Xbox One launches September 4

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds is all set to leave Xbox Game Preview with version 1.0 which will launch on September 4th 2018. Alongside it will come new weapons, Sanhok map and more. Further details can be read below:

While our team will continue to enhance the game and deliver new content to Xbox players, the Full Product Release marks the culmination of our efforts in Xbox Game Preview, where we worked closely with Xbox and the passionate and engaged Xbox community to regularly update, tune, stabilize and enhance the PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds experience for Xbox One. We invite you to learn more about how the game has evolved on Xbox over the last 9 months and the journey to 1.0 in the video asset we debuted on Inside Xbox today in partnership with Xbox.

Fans can look forward to an updated experience for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds on Xbox One that includes:

  • The Xbox One debut of the Sanhok map. Inspired by the islands across Southeast Asia, Sanhok is a 4×4 compact battleground. The map might be smaller, but the battles won’t be, with speedier games and circle dynamics that have been adjusted to bring battles to a dramatic finish more quickly. Sanhok will introduce all-new weapons and vehicles in addition to the debut of dynamic weather changes for the first time on Xbox One.
  • The arrival of War Mode on Xbox One, a deathmatch-style battle royale gaming experience where players hunt each other in a static zone, respawning you back in with a parachute and weapons if you’re killed. Teams get points with kills and reviving teammates, and the team that reaches certain points in the game wins the battle. War Mode will make its hands-on debut on Xbox One at Gamescom 2018 in a can’t-miss experience in the Xbox booth.
  • Achievements that will carry over from Xbox Game Preview to Full Product Release.
  • The introduction of in-game currency to purchase cosmetics, Event Pass: Sanhok, which will allow players to open up more missions, more levels, and tons of permanent rewards on the Sanhok map, and much more. We will share much more detail about these products, how they will work and some of the cool content you’ll be able to unlock closer to 1.0 launch.

The full product release of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds for Xbox One will be available in both digital and retail disc versions, with the retail boxed version featuring an all-new colorway of the game’s iconic key art.

To celebrate the full product release of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds the retail disc version will ship with in-game DLC – the Xbox #1.0/99 Set, featuring an exclusive collection of clothing and accessories inspired by Xbox brand colors.  Current owners of the game, and new players who purchase the game digitally can download the exclusive Xbox #1.0 Set beginning September 4th for a limited time from the in-game lobby, featuring a white branded hoodie and sweatpants and a custom Xbox skinned parachute to drop into battle in style.

If you already own PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds on Xbox One you will receive a content update with all new content and features detailed above on September 4th in addition to the Xbox #1.0 DLC Set.

We’re also excited to announce the Xbox Wireless Controller – PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Limited Edition, which is available for pre-order beginning today and starts shipping to retailers worldwide on Oct. 30 for $69.99 USD.
