Convolution and Kingdom Hearts go hand in hand, but along with it comes a roller-coaster ride of childhood nostalgia, and Kingdom Hearts 3 offers that and more in spades. Releasing almost 13 years after Kingdom Hearts 2, the latest entry in the franchise caps off the series in a satisfying fashion, but does come with a few caveats. Lets dive right in!
First up is the story – it’s complicated. Honestly, you’ll either need to play the previous games or watch a recap video on YouTube to have a complete grasp of everything that’s going on. That doesn’t mean that it is completely alienating to new players. You can still jump in with Sora, Goofy and Donald, and embark on this epic adventure. The story here is still convoluted, but a lot of memorable moments and enjoyable characters make up for all that head scratching.
Kingdom Hearts 3 is a good looking game, and Pixar’s involvement here really shines through. There are some early moments where you can notice some low resolution textures, but for a game that was initially planned for the Playstation 3, it’s understandable. However, after the first few hours, the whole thing is a great mix of vibrant locations, gorgeous vistas and beautiful particle effects during combat.
The combat system is an absolute delight – it feels like a mix between Nier: Automata and Final Fantasy XV. You are constantly moving, jumping around enemies, hacking and slashing away, and stacking up combos. The skills and power-ups are varied and there are enough of them to keep you engaged throughout the 30 hour campaign.
Be ready to meet a whole swathe of characters – Elsa from Frozen, The Pirates of the Caribbean, Goofy, Donald, Buzz Lightyear, and so many more. The various places you go to and the people you meet and help out along the way makes for a really memorable experience.
Kingdom Hearts 3 is not without its faults, the biggest of which is the initial slow burn, that lasts maybe an hour or so. But once it picks up, it just keeps going. If you’re a Disney or a Square fan, you will have great time with Kingdom Hearts 3.
Score – 7/10
