No plans for any handheld successors, Sony says

“Currently, we do not have any plans regarding a new handheld device,” Oda said. “In Japan, we will manufacture PlayStation Vita until 2019. From there, shipping will end.”

In related news, Oda confirmed that the 20 titles in the newly announced PlayStation Classic will differ between Japan and the west. (All of the currently announced titles are shared, however.) Survival Horror Game Home Sweet Home Launches October 9

Partnership Between Mastiff and Yggdrazil Group Brings Home Sweet Home to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One This October

Video game publisher and developer Mastiff, in partnership with Yggdrazil Group, is proud to announce that Home Sweet Home, a chilling first-person survival horror game based on real-world Thai mythology and lore, will be released digitally on the Xbox One family of devices including the Xbox One X, the PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system from Sony, and PlayStation VR for PS4 October 9. A physical edition of Home Sweet Home, which includes the base game and PSVR mode, will be released exclusively to GameStop stores across North America on October 16.

“We are very excited to be working with Mastiff in order to bring the dark, Thai-inspired world of Home Sweet Home to consoles,” shares Saroot Tubloy, Chief Operating Officer of Yggdrazil Group. “The game’s real-world lore and mythology is sure to captivate and intrigue players, while its brooding narrative keeps them clinging to the edge of their seat.”

The first in a series of terrifying first-person horror games, Home Sweet Home throws players into a dark and twisted labyrinth, where a miasma of fear fills the air, dread bleeds through cracks in the ceiling and seeps down through broken floorboards, and anxiety grows stronger with every step.

After a long night filled with mourning and sorrow over the recent disappearance of his wife, Tim awakens to find himself in a strange, dilapidated building instead of the comfort of his own home. Naturally confused, he desperately begins to search for a way out while attempting to solve questions that could lead to answers regarding his wife’s disappearance. At the same time, he’ll find himself being hunted by malevolent spirits.

There is a dark and sinister secret casting a shadow over this interconnected labyrinth… and without question, it’s no longer the happy home that it once was.

• Gripping Thai Horror – A dark narrative inspired by Thai lore, myths, and beliefs that will captivate players while keeping their palms sweating and pulses pounding with fear

• Sharpen Wits, Not Blades – Without weapons to provide defense against the evil spirits, players must keep their wits sharp at all times in order to survive

• Nicely Tied Together – The use of stealth and investigative skills offers gameplay variety and a chance for players to breathe, but not for long….

• Face Your Fears – Experience a new level of first-person fear and terror with PSVR compatibility

Australian Survey Investigation Find Loot Boxes Are “Psychologically Akin To Gambling”

In a recent Australian survey that had over 7,000 gamers, it was found that there were important links between loot box spending and gambling problems. With the hot debate of whether loot boxes are required in modern gaming and with Belgium and The Netherlands banning loot boxes from games, this survey helps the case of removing loot boxes from games.

The journal article that sparked the survey was Published in Nature Human Behaviour and was aptly titled “Video game loot boxes are psychologically akin to gambling”. The results were presented to the Australian Environment and Communications Reference Committee (ECRC) and was led by Dr. David Zendle and Dr. Paul Cairns of York St. John University and University of York respectively.

As seen from the article at gamesindustry, loot boxes are typically disassociated from Gambling when it comes to industry statements but it highlights similarities between loot boxes and something less harmless like trading cards. The journal article further goes on to state that buying of loot boxes could lead to a problem of gambling amongst gamers. This survey and report could very well mean that Australia might be on their way to ban loot boxes or at least add regulations against having loot boxes in video games.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Free for PS4 With Pre-Order of Sony Xperia XZ3

Sony has a tie-up with Activision to help push sales of the upcoming Sony Xperia XZ3 mobile phone in Europe. Pre-ordering the phone gives you a digital code for Call of Duty Black Ops 4 free of cost for the PlayStation 4.

As seen on the Sony Mobile blog post, this seems to be only available to residents of the UK and Ireland and lasts till 5th October 2018 which is the day the phone releases. You cannot just pre-order the phone and then cancel it to get the code, there is a verification process that takes place. “After receiving your new Xperia XZ3 enter the requested details in the form below. You will need your new Xperia XZ3, the box with the EAN number and the device’s IMEI code to complete this step.”

Redemption for the digital download will start on Friday 28th September. This seems specific to those countries for now and is an interesting move on Sony’s part to get people to pre-order the phone as it gives them an extra incentive in the form of a $60 AAA video game for free.

YouTube Gaming is Closing

Youtube is one of the biggest platforms for video sharing and hosts so many different content creators from all over the world, some of whom’s sole source of income is Youtube. While Twitch started to dominate the Gaming Live Streaming market, Youtube decided to launch the Youtube Gaming app and site in an attempt to get creators to use that as well.

Youtube Gaming’s dedicated app is being shut down and you won’t be asked over and over again if you want to watch a live stream on the Youtube Gaming webpage or app. This is mainly due to the fact that it didn’t get the reach that Youtube had hoped for and have decided to make a change to it. Instead of completely removing it, they’re adding it to the main Youtube site where it will have a dedicated home.

The new gaming home of Youtube will have rows of recommended videos and streams, popular live streams and content from your subscriptions. On top of that, you will have the option to choose specific games as your favourite so that the Youtube Algorithm will recommend those games more. It will also have a section titled “On The Rise” which will feature trending content creators. They plan to retire the Youtube Gaming App in March 2019 and the new page can be seen at youtube.com/gaming.

You can read all about this change here on the youtube blogpost.

Resonance Of Fate 4K / HD Edition Announced For PS4 And PC

Tri-Ace’s Gun-Slinging RPG Classic Resonance of Fate Remastered as a 4K/HD Edition for PS4 and PC

Japan-based software developer tri-Ace today announced that it has remastered its classic tactical gunplay role-playing game Resonance of Fate in 4K HD as a digital-only release on PlayStation 4 and, for the first time, on PC. The steampunk aesthetic, fateful story, soaring symphonic soundtrack, and intense gun combat for which the game is known now burst to life and play out in incredibly high resolution. All the action is set to a magnificent music score composed by Motoi Sakuraba and Kohei Tanaka.

Launching with the new Resonance of Fate 4K/HD Edition website and 4K trailer, PS4 pre-sales begin today on the PlayStation store, as does the wish-list registration for the PC version on Steam. The game slated for release this October.

Set in the distant future when humankind nears extinction and is ruled by the ‘Basel’ perpetual motion machine – a massive environmental conservation device of man’s own making run amuck; Resonance of Fate weaves a tale of guns and emotional bonds during this end of days. The game’s three protagonists – Zephyr, Vashyron, and Leanne, work as mercenaries and, through their missions uncover the truth behind the ruling Cardinals and Basel.

Originally released in early 2010 on the PS3 and Xbox 360 platforms (and known as End of Eternity in Japan), Resonance of Fate received accolades for its ‘tri-attack’ battle system – a mix of real-time and turn-based controls; the focus on gun combat and gun customization; and its over-the-top cinematic hero actions of the main characters. Critics praised the gameplay and unique combat system that combines strategy with aerial gun battles and fast-paced thrills.

Eurogamer called its innovative design “one of the most inspired approaches to the role-playing video game seen in a decade”, while IGN called the combat system the ”…star of the show”. US Gamer lauded the combat’s fast pace and emphasis on teamwork, while Jostein Johnson of 1UP credited the game with redefining the turn-based battle system, attempting to turn it “into an interactive animated film… saving the JRPG” and “truly renewing it for more advanced technology. RPGamer doled out several award nominations, with the game garnering Runner-Up for its “Best Battle System”, “Best Script”, “Best Voice-Acting”, “Best Console RPG” and “Most Overlooked” awards; and winning RPGamer’s “Most Original” award.

Resonance of Fate 4K/HD Edition PS4 presales begin today and those ordering the game in advance will receive exclusive PS4 themes and avatar sets. The ability to add the PC version to Steam wish-lists also unlocks today. Resonance of Fate 4K/HD Edition will be released globally on October 18. 2018 for $35 USD price or EU €35.
