Top 10 Best Games of 2018 | GamingMonk’s Best of 2018

2018 was nothing but a blockbuster year for video games. The entire year has slapped us in the face with amazing titles, one after the other. Sure, it’s quite hard (not to mention unfair) of us to pick just 10 of those and tell you about it, but you know, someone’s gotta do it. So here are our top 10 games of 2018.

  1. Red Dead Redemption 2

God of War may have won GOTY at TGA 2018, but for us, Rockstar’s telling of Arthur Morgan’s story had a much bigger impact. Whether it’s looks, or story, or characters, Red Dead Redemption 2 is a work of art. It’s a memorable story of loyalty and trust, of murder and betrayal, set against a beautiful but unforgiving environment in the Wild West days. Some gameplay issues notwithstanding, it’s seriously hard to overstate what an amazing job Rockstar has done with this title.
  2. God of War

Just because we feel that Red Dead Redemption 2 should be GOTY, it doesn’t mean we’re going to disregard the game that actually won the award. The reboot is quite amazing, both from a visual and a narrative standpoint. Changing the formula from an angry, young man, Kratos is back as an angry, old father. Taking his son on a journey to scatter his mother’s ashes, the game gives players deep insight into his relationship with his son, Atreus. Moments where Kratos struggles to express his affection, and a terrible secret that may very well change his son’s life forever. It’s polar opposite of what the original God of War games were about, and the direction it’s taking is impressive to say the least.
  3. Marvel’s Spider-Man

What more can we say about the title that is the only game to ever receive the Marvel Stamp of Approval? It’s got everything you’d want from a Spiderman game. Multiple suits? Check. Swinging across New York from the tallest skyscrapers? Check. Webbing guys up in awkward positions? Checkity check. Also, Mary Jane is really cute, so that’s also there.
  4. Return of the Obra Dinn

From the makers of Papers, Please comes another unique, impressive title in the form of a murder mystery. Playing as an insurance agent on an abandoned ship, your job is to piece together the story behind the disappearance of the crew. The visual style of the game is quite novel and refreshing, and so is the story and gameplay.
  5. Dead Cells

For people who like super hard games (alternatively, people who hate themselves), Dead Cells is an absolute must play. To put it simply, the game is a rogue-like metroidvania, with procedurally generated levels and impressive pixel art visuals. And brutal, unforgiving gameplay. Seriously, you’ll die a lot.
  6. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4

Black Ops 4 breathes fresh new life in the Call of Duty series that was in desperate need of it. It brings back the fast-fluid gameplay, while keeping everything grounded. Plus, Blackout, the new Battle Royale mode is easily the best in the genre right now.
  7. Dragonball FighterZ

Apart being an excellent fighting game, Dragonball FighterZ looks absolutely fantastic. It completely nails the crisp, over-the top action that Dragonball is known for. It’s also easy for beginners to get into, due to the auto-combo feature, but also offers deep systems and a good challenge to those willing to master the game.
  8. Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the last in Lara Croft’s reboot trilogy, and it’s a great finale. While the story is throwaway, the tombs and puzzles are top-notch. It’s incredibly exciting and rewarding to explore the new regions, and there’s always a new challenge around every corner. And to top it off, Shadow of the Tomb Raider is damn good looking game.
  9. A Way Out

A Way Out was the most fun I had playing a game with a friend in 2018. It’s is an exclusively co-op adventure about two strangers coming together under dire circumstances to break out of prison. The narrative is compelling, the moment to moment action moves at an excellent pace, and the co-op gameplay is immensely fun.
  10. Hitman 2

Hitman 2 can be summed up as more Hitman with some refinements. And it still is as much fun as the original reboot, with massive levels, tons of ways to eliminate targets, and leave the level in utter chaos. Killing someone with an ax to the head in the middle of a crowded conference room never gets old.

So those were our picks for the best games of 2018. Did we miss anything? Let us know in the comments below.

Top 10 Best Looking Games | GamingMonk’s Best of 2018

Graphics have always been a big part of what makes video games fun. It’s pretty much what most consoles base as their main selling point, and graphical prowess often becomes the big part of discussion among most AAA games. 2018 had a lot of great looking titles, and here are our top 10 favorite picks:

  1. Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 is hands down the best looking game you will play on a console. From the lighting, to the gorgeous vistas, the incredible draw distance and the attention to detail, RDR 2 is an absolute graphical powerhouse.
  2. Shadow of the Tomb Raider

Say what you will about the game, but Shadow of the Tomb Raider sure is a looker. The mountain village holds breathtaking views and the jungles looks dense and dripping with atmosphere.
  3. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

It’s easy to overlook Odyssey’s grind given how beautiful the game looks. Sure, there are re-used assets from Origins all over the place, but Greece has been gorgeously realized and the graphics make the exploration all the more rewarding.
  4. God of War

Kratos’ return makes for not just an angrier God of War, but also a lot prettier. Fantastic particle effects make every fight all the more bombastic, and excellent facial animations bring almost character to life.
  5. Forza Horizon 4

Racing games have always been graphical showcases for consoles, and Forza Horizon 4 on the Xbox One X is easily the best display of how powerful the console is.
  6. Battlefield V

Despite the controversy around NVIDIA’s new RTX cards, it’s hard to deny how good Battlefield V looks especially with RTX on. Fantastic light and fire effects, makes this the most intense battlefield experience to date.
  7. Marvel’s Spider-Man

After years of waiting, Spider-man fans have a game that they can finally be happy about. The Manhattan skyline is a sight to behold, and as the city flies by you while you zip around and take down foes, the game both looks and feels just right.
  8. Kingdom Come Deliverance

Kingdom Come: Deliverance is another gorgeous graphical showcase, especially on PC. Dense foliage, massive battles, crowded cities, and rolling plains are all brought to life in this game, mostly due to the how good the game looks.
  9. Spyro Reignited Trilogy

Don’t let the cartoonish looks fool you, Spyro Reignited Trilogy is a gorgeous looking title. The bright and vibrant environment, coupled with top notch water effects and reflections breathe new life into a beloved game from our childhood. And the animations, are well, some of the best we’ve ever seen.
  10. Dragonball FighterZ

Apart from being one of the best fighting games we’ve ever played, Dragonball FghterZ was also a great looking game. It captures the over-the-top style of the anime perfectly, and delivers the action with great visual finesse.

So those were our picks for the best looking games of 2018. Did we miss anything? Let us know in the comments below.

Red Dead Online To Feature Story Missions and Battle Royale?

Red Dead Online is upon us and with that, the data miners have started mining for any piece of juicy information that they can get their hands on.

Thanks to Twitter user illogicalmods and his efforts, we now know that the game will have a Battle Royale mode called Make It Count. Make It Count will pit you against a full server(32 players) where you fight to be the last one standing by killing other players and by also staying in an ever-shrinking circle like in most Battle Royale games.

What’s surprising from the information leaked by illogicalmods is that there seems to be some sort of story-based missions that will affect your honour. GTA Online had missions that were set both before and after the events of the Single Player campaign but didn’t have any coherent story as such. In Red Dead Online, however, it seems like there might be some semblance of a story of sorts which is started by a character named Horley giving you the missions.

It will be very interesting to see how Rockstar tackles Red Dead Online in the long run. Will they add steampunk things to the game since they can add rocket bikes and jetpacks? What about weird mythical horses and other rideable beasts.

If you’re looking to get in on the Online action for Red Dead Redemption 2 then you can play it starting today on 27th November. If you played the game on Launch day then you will gain access to the Beta on 28th, if you played during the Launch Weekend then you will gain access on 29th and then on 30th everyone with the game will be able to play Red Dead Online.

Read Dead Online Beta Early Access Begins Nov 27, Full Public Access Begins Nov 30

Now that everyone has had a chance over the past month to experience the story of Arthur Morgan and the Van der Linde gang in Red Dead Redemption 2, it is almost time to begin the beta period for Red Dead Online. Early access to the Red Dead Online beta begins on Tuesday, November 27, working up to full public access on Friday, November 30.

Built from the ground up for the latest hardware, Red Dead Online blends the classic multiplayer of the original Red Dead Redemption with the best of everything we have learned since then about creating deep multiplayer experiences. The result is something completely new and fun, and an experience that will continue to expand and evolve over time.

A Vibrant New World

With the gameplay of Red Dead Redemption 2 as its foundation, Red Dead Online transforms the vast and deeply detailed landscapes, cities, towns and habitats of Red Dead Redemption 2 into a new, living online world ready to be shared by multiple players. Create and customize your character, tailor your abilities to suit your play style and head out into a new frontier full of things to experience.

Explore the world solo or with friends. Form or join a Posse to ride with up to seven players; gather around the fire at your Camp; head out hunting or fishing; visit bustling towns; battle enemy gangs and attack their hideouts; hunt for treasure; take on missions and interact with familiar characters from across the five states; or fight against other outlaws in both spontaneous skirmishes and pitched set-piece battles; compete with other players or whole Posses in open world challenges and much more.

Beta Period and Access

The launch of the Red Dead Online Beta is the first step in what will be a continually expanding and dynamic world, and the beta period will allow us to deal with the inevitable turbulence of launching any online experience of this size and scale.

During this process, we will be looking to our dedicated community to help us report and fix problems, share ideas, and assist in shaping the future of the full Online experience. As with all of our releases, we will strive to make the launch of Red Dead Online the best it can possibly be, and we ask that the community share that spirit with us over the next weeks and months.

To help us ease into the beta and to mitigate major issues, we will begin the early access period starting Tuesday, November 27 at 8:30am EST, and gradually scale the player base up to full access beginning on Friday, November 30. This will help ensure that our servers can handle a steadily growing volume of concurrent players in the early hours and first days of the Beta and hopefully reduce the likelihood of any server crashes during the launch week as we get things up and running. Full rollout details are as follows:

• Tuesday, November 27th: All Red Dead Redemption 2: Ultimate Edition owners. Please note, players who purchased the physical Ultimate Edition must redeem the Ultimate Edition code in the packaging to be eligible.

• Wednesday, November 28th: All players who played Red Dead Redemption 2 on October 26th according to our data.

• Thursday, November 29th: All players who played Red Dead Redemption 2 between October 26th to October 29th according to our data.

• Friday, November 30th: All players who own Red Dead Redemption 2.

The Red Dead Online Beta will be available to anyone who owns Red Dead Redemption 2 on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One starting Friday, November 30. When booting up Red Dead Redemption 2 and arriving to the title menu, you will see an option in the top right of the screen to select Online.

Stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire tomorrow for more details about Red Dead Online modes, gameplay and more.

Red Dead Redemption 2 – Five Details You Missed

Red Dead Redemption 2 is a huge game with so much to do that it can seem overwhelming and you might even miss out on some of the little things because of how grandiose and spectacular everything is. Here are five details in Red Dead Redemption 2 that you may have missed.

Bullet Hole in Boats

Boats in the game are quite amazing. While in other games shooting a boat will damage and cause it to sink, in RDR 2 proper bullet holes form when you shoot the boat. If the part that you’ve shot is in contact with the water, you will even see water rush into the boat from the holes before it capsizes.

Catch Physics

The physics in the game are impressive but there’s a neat little detail tied with it.  If you run into tables or barrels with items on it, they might get knocked off based on how you hit it. If you do this while in the first-person mode and add an item that is falling off the table into your inventory, you will witness Arthur catch the item midair and keep it in his pocket.

Damaged NPCs

If you decide to rob a store and decide to beat up the clerk a tad bit before you get what you want, you will notice that the next time you return the clerk will have visible wounds and if you beat them up severely, they might even have bandages on their face.

Clock Sync

If you pay attention to your environment you will notice that a lot of places have clocks. These clocks are accurate to the in-game time and you can even see the hands move if you stand and watch the time pass you by.

Horse Damage

Your Horses can die if you don’t take care of them. However, if your horse were to catch on fire and burn but survive, they’d be scarred. Forever. Your horse will now be completed charred without any fur. Poor horsie though but, it does look a little badass.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Was Not The Fastest Selling Game Of 2018

Red Dead Redemption 2 has clearly become Rockstar’s biggest hit but is not the fastest selling game of 2018. A little weird when you think about it but let’s take a deeper look.

While Red Dead Redemption 2 is the second fastest game this year, the top spot is held by FIFA 19. It makes sense since people of ages play FIFA 19 while a lot of teenagers could miss out on RDR 2 because their parents might stop them from getting it. Another reason for this is because RDR2 is only available on two current gen devices while FIFA 19 is available on almost every platform, including last gen ones.

According to GfK UK charts, which include only boxed physical sales, 68% sales come from PlayStation users with the remaining 32% coming from Xbox users. However, if we were to add digital sales to this mix, the numbers would be much higher but until we get an official report we can only speculate. GTA V sold 2 million copies in its first week, something that Red Dead Redemption 2 couldn’t beat.

Look Out For Aliens In Red Dead Redemption 2

Red Dead Redemption 2 has a great world that feels authentic and lively but did you know you can find aliens in Red Dead Redemption 2?

That’s right folks, Rockstar is back with their Alien easter eggs. Rockstar’s previous release, Grand Theft Auto V also had various easter eggs with regards to Aliens and UFOs and there’s still an ongoing mystery regarding Mount Chiliad. Red Dead Redemption 2 also has one which we’ll tell you how to start off.

  • Head to a small shack next to a pond, found between the ‘N’ and ‘O’ of New Hanover on your map (just above Emerald Ranch)

You can do this at any time and don’t need 100% completion for this. Once you get there head to the desk near the fireplace and pick up the note and follow the clues on it.

Here’s the full video walkthrough in case you can’t find it yourself or need a little help. Or if you just want to spoil it for yourself.
