On August 10, 2020 CD Projekt Red aired the 2nd episode of Night City Wire, their own in house reveal show. During the show the developers gave fans a deep dive by showing an overview of weapons, RPG elements and lore in the game.
At the very start of the game you would be asked to make one of the most difficult decisions of your playthrough and that is deciding which out of the three lifepaths to choose. The lifepath you end up choosing will dictate the starting few hours of your game as well as open new possibilities to explore, way into the story.
The Nomad belongs to a group in the Badlands, a deserted area outside the limits of Night City. Nomads are people who value freedom and family more than anything else. After your family is left in pieces, your character path finds themselves abandoning their group. Players will start their games in this outskirts area trying to find their way into the Night City. Choosing this option will not only result in a different start to the game but also may impact your journey and its ending.
This character path with you sitting in the skyscrapers among the wealthy fat cats of Night City. Players who select this option have risen to one of the higher positions at the Arasaka Corporation. These players have the insight to read between the lines, using their expert negotiation skills. This may become very useful down the line as the game is filled with conversations with different characters and amazing narratives.
The Street Kid character path grew up in Night City and knows the streets just as good as anyone. They’re familiar with the ins and outs of local gangs, slang, and other usual happenings. The street smarts that come with this pathway will be of utmost convenience as the player interacts with a colorful cast of shady characters throughout the campaign.
Now there’s a lot to cover here so let’s start with different types of weapons that are available to the player during their play-through.
Includes various expendable throwing options. Perhaps knives, shurikens and who knows what else can be a throwable weapon in the world of Cyberpunk.
Includes cybernetically enhanced weapons attached to the body like the special “Monowire” thread that we saw in the early trailers, the projectile system, the Gorilla arm reinforcement and the huge blades called “Mantis”.
Melee options range from spiked bats to hot-bladed katana.
Based on contemporary weapons they can ricochet bullets off surfaces which normal weapons cannot. With these weapons you can even hit a target that disappeared around the corner of a building or some kind of cover.
These weapons use electromagnetic power to propel a fully metal projectile to extreme velocities and thanks to this they easily break through various types of cover. You can even kill someone who don’t even know you are there, a perfect weapon type for a sniper.
These weapons use guided missile technology to track enemies in real time. Making them a perfect weapon to use against someone behind cover or a swift enemy.
The world of Cyberpunk has a lot of different weapon manufacturers just like borderlands series. Now how does weapons from different manufacturers affect gameplay remains to be seen. It seems the whole system around these weapons is highly reminiscent of the Borderlands and the Destiny series, both of whom are best examples of great RPG’s.
Another thing to note is that these weapons can be bought from merchants in the game world as well as be found when defeating enemies. However, the best weapons you can find, will be taken from enemies or from loot caches. These weapons also have different rarities going from common through uncommon up to rare and then legendary. Legendary weapons in particular possess unique abilities that cannot be found on any other weapons.
There are essentially two types of weapon modifications in the game. One is attachments like scopes, silencers, suppressors, etc which give you a tactical advantage. The other is software mods which are basically chips that you install in your weapons. They give you statistical advantage such as more damage, accuracy, fire rate, etc.
Some of these mods can even change gun play on a more fundamental level like giving your weapons non lethal rounds or biochemical rounds to tear through armor even faster.
The developers also gave an explanation to the lore of the world of Cyberpunk and tells us who fixers are. Fixers are people that work as intermediaries, so if someone who has a lot of money needs a problem fixed they go to a fixer who in turn hire people like you, V, cyberpunks to get the job done. Fixers are highly territorial and each one has a different district in Night City.
During the show there were also hints of the player being able to play as the fan favorite character Johnny Silverhand, who is portrayed by Keanu Reaves the lead actor of films such as the Matrix and John Wick. This is most probably a part of a flashback explaining the Johnny’s origin.
CD Projekt Red is famous for their branching narratives and multiple quest endings as seen in their previous projects such as The Witcher Series. So one can expect Cyberpunk to also have a wide variety of dialogue options and mission endings.
Each different life path also brings something new to the table and affects your time throughout the whole game so pick carefully. It also makes going through a 2nd or 3rd playthrough even more worthwhile with a different lifepath. So tell us which lifepath are you gonna choose?
