RTX 2070 Super Review: The Perfect Card For 1440p Gaming

You know, I can’t help but feel bad for AMD. Every time they go to announce a new GPU, the green team is ready, waiting to pounce. It’s like that friend everyone has, who likes to make everything about themselves. You know the type. When the red team announced the Vega GPUs, NVIDIA was quick to reveal the GTX 1070Ti. And this year seems to be no different. Just a week before the Navi launch, the green team was ready with its RTX Super line up. And today we’re playing around with the RTX 2070 Super.

The RTX 2070 Super is an upgraded version of the 2070, with a bump in core counts, clock speeds and much more. In a way you can also consider it as a shaved down version of the original 2080, as it uses the same TU104 die as the RTX 2080. CUDA core count is up to 2560 from the 2070’s 2304. The base clock speed in the 2070 Super is 1605 MHz, which is pretty close to the 2070’s boost clock speed. Tensor cores are up too, from 288 in the 2070 to 320 in the 2070 Super. Understandably, these boosts also result in a TDP increase of 40W, from the 2070’s 175W to 215W in the 2070 Super. This also means that the 2070 Super now requires an additional 6-pin power connector, like the 2080.

Visually, the RTX 2070 Super looks quite similar to the original RTX series, with the same dual fan design and form factor. The difference here is in the middle, where it now sports the “super branding” on a reflective, glossy surface. Personally, I prefer the matte black finish on the original RTX cards, but hey, to each their own. 

On the display front, the 2070 Super display ditches the DVI port found on the 2070 in the favour of another DisplayPort, bringing the count to 3 DisplayPorts, one HDMI port and one USB Type-C. But the real deal, and the frankly, the one thing that care about the most is performance, and how well the card holds up against the 2070 and the 2080. So, take a look at the scores.

Performance and Benchmarks

Right off the bat, it’s hard not to be impressed by the 2070 Super’s performance. The card gives really solid numbers at 1440p throughout the benchmarks, and in some cases is pretty viable for 4K too, if you don’t mind turning down the graphics settings. Overall, the performance gap between the 2070 Super and the 2080 was less than 10%. The cheapest RTX 2080 we could find was worth 59,000 INR, so at the launch price of 43,600 INR, that makes it amazing value for money. Compared to the 2070 is where the price gap is a little close, as the cheapest RTX 2070 we found costs 38,000. The 2070 Super outperforms the 2070 by a little over 10% on the average at 1440p, so even here it doesn’t sound like a bad option. 

Now, the big question is, what prompted the release of the Super cards? NVIDIA claims that it was the tech improvements and tweaking that’s allowed them to obtain better yields, which certainly sounds plausible. But the timing of this launch, just a few days before the release of AMD’s Navi GPUs can lead one to believe otherwise. I mean, we did see the RX 5700 cards competing closely with the 2070 in the leaked benchmarks. So it wouldn’t be completely off base for one to think that NVIDIA, with their Super cards are trying to get ahead of the competition before the Navi cards are even out. In that case, you know who to thank for the Super’s sensible pricing. I mean, it has been a long time coming. This is what RTX pricing should have been from the beginning, especially considering the serious lack of ray tracing support in games when it launched. But as they say, better late than never.

All said and done, with its competitive pricing, the RTX 2070 Super is an amazing card for 1440p gaming. At 43,600 INR, you get considerable gains for a small increase in price, and a good ray tracing experience too. People who have already bought the 2070 will feel bad, but for those who were still waiting to get their hands on an RTX GPU, this is it. 

Review: XRIG X1-G1 Portable Gaming Desktop

When it comes to desktops, space and portability are two of the most common problem areas for a PC gamer. But that doesn’t mean that you have to compromise on one or the other, because today we’re going to talk about the XRIG X1 G1 gaming PC, an adorable desktop box that packs quite a punch.

The XRIG X1 G1 is a cute little rectangular box that can fit anywhere in your room without causing much of an issue. But don’t be fooled by its size, the PC packs quite a punch. At the heart of it is an Intel Core i5-9400f coupled with a ZOTAC GTX 1660. It comes with 16GB DDR4 RAM running at 3000 MHz along with dual storage options, a 240 GB SSD for your OS and softwares, plus a 1 TB 7200 RPM HDD for storing games and media. And it comes with a carry bag, so you can simply pack it up and take it with you without any hassles.

In addition to being compact, the X1 is quite the looker too. The well crafted and polished design is nothing short of luxurious, and the classy black brushed aluminium finish is a sight to behold. It’s simple, minimal and elegant, with a glossy XRIG logo on the front. It’s cutting edge too, quite literally, because the edges are actually pretty sharp.

When it comes to connectivity, the X1 offers plenty of options. On the back, there are 4 USB 3.0 ports, 2 USB 2.0 ports, two PS/2 ports, 3.5 mm audio jacks, and one HDMI and VGA port each for onboard graphics. The GTX 1660 comes with 3 DisplayPorts and one HDMI port, and there’s a Wifi card as well. For front I/O, there is one USB 3.0, one USB 2.0, two 3.5 mm jacks and a power button with an LED ring around it. One option that’s missing and I would’ve liked to see is a USB Type-C port.

Performance and Tech Specs

Packing an Intel i5-9400f and a GTX 1660, the XRIG X1 G1 is a pretty powerful device, capable of running most of the latest games at 1080p 60 FPS at medium to high settings. It’s more of a mid-range build, but it gets the job done without any problems. One great feature that the X1 G1 comes with is a custom overclock profile for the GTX 1660 in MSI Afterburner. Just press ‘Scroll Lock’ with Afterburner running, and you can see your GPU overclock to preset values, giving you about at least 10% boost in game performance. Take a look at the numbers yourself.

Starting off with Cinebench R20, the Intel Core i5-9400f powered XRIG shows itself to be a very capable processor, scoring 418 points in the single-core test and 2340 points in the multi-core benchmark.

Moving to the 3DMark Time Spy Benchmark, we see an overall well rounded performance from the X1, with a graphics score of 6030 and an overall score of 5933 in the overclocked profile.

Running the DX11 based 3DMark FireStrike tool which tests the PC’s performance for 1080p, we get impressive results. The system obtained an overall score of 11685 points, with the individual graphics score being 14006 points in the stock profile, and 13284 and 15895 with the overclock.

PCMark is a benchmark tool that provides metrics for your PC’s overall general performance. Being a gaming PC, the XRIG is more than powerful enough to handle almost any task you throw at it, obtaining an overall score of 5444 points in the stock profile and 5577 points when overclocked.

Before moving on to the in-game benchmarks, we also tested the X1 using Unigine’s Superposition tool on the 1080p high preset, where the system scored 8363 points, with an average framerate of 62 FPS while overclocked.

Moving on to the in-game benchmarks, the X1 continued to impress us with its performance. We ran a bunch of tests and were more than satisfied with the results in each case. In Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 DX 12 benchmark running on the High preset, the X1 obtained an average framerate of 81 FPS at stock speed, jumping up to 90 FPS when overclocked. In Metro Exodus, at High with RTX off, we obtained an average of 47 FPS and 54 FPS without and with the overclock respectively. Keep in mind that Metro’s benchmark tool is more intensive than the actual game in general and hence the in-game framerates while playing will be higher.

We also tested GTA V with the graphics settings set to Very High, and obtained an average 100 FPS with the X1. Here we saw the biggest jump in performance after overclocking, with the FPS boosting up to 133. Concluding our benchmarks with the Vulkan World War Z test, we obtained an average of 89 FPS at stock speed, with an increase to 99 FPS while running the overclock profile.

When it comes to a compact form factor, the biggest concern for any user is the thermals. But faces no problems on that front either, thanks to the 140mm Noctua fan at the bottom. The max temperature we observed during testing was 82 C for the GPU and 78 C for the CPU with the overclock profile active, without any throttling at any point. The system does create some noise when under load, but it’s not enough to cause any discomfort, and barely discernible if you have a headset on.

The Verdict

With its compact design and pretty powerful specs, the XRIG X1 is a solid option for 1080p 60 FPS gaming, provided you don’t care about running every game on the highest settings. It’s easy on the eyes, and a great PC for both casual and esports gamers.  For those who are short on space and want a compelling, well-rounded pre-built PC, at a price point of INR 74,000, the X1  G1 is not a bad deal at all.

NVIDIA and CDPR Partner Up To Bring Ray Tracing To Cyberpunk 2077

NVIDIA and CD PROJEKT RED today announced that NVIDIA® GeForce RTX™ is an official technology partner for Cyberpunk 2077 and that the companies are working together to bring real-time ray tracing to the game.

Cyberpunk 2077 won over 100 awards at E3 2018 and Gamespot calls it “one of the most anticipated games of the decade.” The game is the next project from CD PROJEKT RED, makers of the highly acclaimed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, which has won numerous “Game of the Year” awards. NVIDIA and CD PROJEKT RED have a long history of technology collaboration that spans more than a decade.

Cyberpunk 2077 is an incredibly ambitious game, mixing first-person perspective and deep role-playing, while also creating an intricate and immersive world in which to tell its story,” said Matt Wuebbling, head of GeForce marketing at NVIDIA. “We think the world of Cyberpunk will greatly benefit from the realistic lighting that ray tracing delivers.”

Ray tracing is the advanced graphics technique used to give movies their ultra-realistic visual effects. NVIDIA GeForce RTX GPUs contain specialized processor cores designed specifically to accelerate ray tracing so the visual effects in games can be rendered in real time. 

“Ray tracing allows us to realistically portray how light behaves in a crowded urban environment,” says Adam Badowski, head of Studio at CD PROJEKT RED. “Thanks to this technology, we can add another layer of depth and verticality to the already impressive megacity the game takes place in.”

Cyberpunk 2077 is an open-world, action-adventure story set in Night City, a megalopolis obsessed with power, glamour and body modification. You play as V, a mercenary outlaw going after a one-of-a-kind implant that is the key to immortality. You can customize your character’s cyberware, skillset and playstyle, and explore a vast city where the choices you make shape the story and the world around you.

Review: BenQ Zowie Celeritas II Gaming Keyboard

Zowie has made quite a name for itself in the recent years, especially in the esports arena. The brand is regularly coming up with peripherals catering to the esports players, from keyboards and headsets to high refresh rate displays. The Celeritas II is the latest gaming keyboard in the Zowie lineup, priced at INR 10,900. But is it worth the price? Let’s find out.

The philosophy behind the Celeritas II seems to be straightforward: elegance in simplicity. The keyboard has a pretty standard design; in fact, from a distance, it doesn’t look much different from a normal office keyboard. But don’t let that fool you, because on the inside the Celeritas screams gaming. It uses custom optical switches instead of the Cherry MX Brown like its predecessor. Optical switches are a new form of mechanical switches, which use light for actuation instead of a mechanical connection. As such, they have an advantage over conventional mechanical switches as optical switches can be faster and more durable.

It follows the popular ‘red and black’ colour scheme that we’ve seen with almost every brand by now. The keyboard has a matte black finish, keeping it simple without any frill.  At 1.89kg, the Celeritas II is a bit on the heavier side of the spectrum. It measures about 44.2 x 17 cm, which means it doesn’t take up too much space on your table. There are four rubber grips on the base which prevent the keyboard from sliding on the surface.

While the gaming community is moving towards a more colorful RGB lit world, the Celeritas II keeps things rather uncomplicated with a simple Red LED backlight. You can adjust the brightness and toggle it on/off using the Fn keys, which also double up as media control buttons. The choice to go for flashy RGB is rather subjective; on one hand, you can argue that the red backlight results in a less distracting experience. But on the other hand, not having the option to customize the backlight colour, especially at the INR 10000 price point seems a bit lacking.

One of the more interesting features the Celeritas II offers is PS/2 compatibility, and the keyboard comes with a USB to PS/2 adapter in the box. Even though most of the people have switched to USB by now, it’s nice to have that option to use PS/2 should you feel like using it. And Zowie has also brought the Real Time Response (RTR) function to the keyboard, which is useful in games where the player needs to activate multiple commands simultaneously. RTR can only be used via PS/2.

Talking about performance, here’s when the Celeritas II begins to set itself apart. Unlike a lot of its gaming counterparts, the Celeritas is completely plug and play, and doesn’t require you to use any software to set it up. It supports N-key rollover, meaning each keypress is detected individually, regardless of how many keys are being pressed at the same time. The wrist support can be a little small for some users, but it’s not hard to get used to. Furthermore, the optical switch driven keys are responsive and swift, making games like PUBG and Apex Legends a joy to play. You can quickly move between different keys without much resistance and take action, meaning esports players can really use it to their advantage. Single player games are equally fun, whether you’re trying to survive in Metro: Exodus or wrecking the city in GTA V.  Typing, on the other hand, doesn’t feel as good, as I prefer a bit of more tactile feedback than the Celeritas II offers.

Overall, the Celeritas II is a great keyboard, with a clear emphasis on functionality over aesthetics. It’s well built, sturdy, and gets the job done without any nonsense. The optical switches are ideal for both casual and professional gamers, and it doesn’t require you to jump through any hoops to set up.  The only downside, is that at a price of INR 10,900, it feels a little costly, especially when you consider other options that offer much more in terms of customization options.

16 Core AMD Ryzen 9 3950X Beats 18 Core Intel i9-9980XE in Leaked Geekbench Scores

AMD recently announced the Ryzen 9 3950 X, the first mainstream gaming processor with 16 cores and 32 threads. And it seems like the CPU is on road to breaking more records, as leaked Geekbench benchmarks show it annihilating Intel’s flagship 18 core i9-9980XE in both single and multi-threaded workloads.

The leak comes from the reliable TUM_APISAK, where in the Geekbench 4 tests, the 3950X scored 5868 points in the single threaded benchmark and 61072 points in the multi-threaded tests. Compared to that, the 18 core Intel Core i9-9980XE scores around 5300 and 42000 in single and multi-threaded tests respectively,  AND it comes with a price tag of $2000. To put things in perspective, the price of the Ryzen 9 3950X as announced by AMD is expected to be around  $749.

The Ryzen 9 3950X comes with 16 cores and 32 threads, with base clock speed of 3.5 GHz and boosts up to 4.7 GHz. The TDP for the CPU is 105W.

NVIDIA RTX Super Graphics Cards Coming Soon

NVIDIA teased a ‘super’ announcement recently, via a short video. Following that, rumours starting surfacing that NVIDIA is planning to announce faster versions of their RTX graphics cards. Maybe the two are related?

Tom’s Hardware’s Igor Wallossek reports that NVIDIA will indeed be announcing better variants of RTX cards, branded as RTX Super, providing some details about the different models. The RTX Super line-up will see an increase in core counts, According to Igor, the RTX 2080 Super will make use of the TU104 GPU with 3072 CUDA Cores, with the memory boosted up to 16 Gbps, from the original 2080’s 14 Gbps. The RTX 2070 Super, on the other hand, is supposed to have 2560 CUDA Cores compared to the 2070’s 2304.

This announcement comes soon after AMD revealed its 7nm Navi based RX 5000 graphics cards at E3 earlier this week. The RTX Super will be competing directly with AMD’s Radeon RX 5700 and 5700 XT. Considering that DXR ray tracing is mostly supported on NVIDIA’s RTX hardware, and the increasing number of ray tracing compatible titles being announced (check out Watch Dogs Legion, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and more), NVIDIA may be in a good place to compete with the red team, especially if they price the cards right.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Will Have DXR Ray Tracing Powered By NVIDIA RTX

2019—NVIDIA and Activision today announced that NVIDIA is the official
PC partner for Call of Duty®: Modern Warfare®, the highly anticipated, all-new title scheduled for release on Oct. 25.

NVIDIA is working side by side with developer Infinity Ward to bring real-time DirectX Raytracing (DXR), and NVIDIA® Adaptive Shading gaming technologies to the PC version of the new Modern Warfare.

“Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is poised to reset the bar upon release this October,” said Matt Wuebbling, head of GeForce marketing at NVIDIA. “NVIDIA is proud to partner closely with this epic development and contribute toward the creation of this gripping experience. Our teams of engineers have been working closely with Infinity Ward to use NVIDIA RTX technologies to display the realistic effects and incredible immersion that Modern Warfare offers.”

The most celebrated series in Call of Duty will make its return in a powerful experience reimagined from the ground up. Published by Activision and developed by Infinity Ward, the PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare will release on Blizzard Battle.net. Modern Warfare features a unified narrative
experience and progression across an epic, heart-racing, single-player story, an action-packed multiplayer playground, and new cooperative gameplay.

“Our work with NVIDIA GPUs has helped us throughout the PC development of Modern Warfare,” said Dave Stohl, co-studio head at Infinity Ward. “We’ve seamlessly integrated the RTX features like ray tracing and adaptive shading into our rendering pipeline. It’s been a great addition to our existing technology, and we look forward to our PC fans experiencing it for themselves very soon.”

DXR brings real-time, cinematic-quality rendering to content creators and game developers. DXR consists of a highly scalable ray-tracing technology and runs on NVIDIA Turing, NVIDIA Volta and NVIDIA Pascal architecture GPUs.

NVIDIA Adaptive Shading is a new, advanced shading technique that enables developers to improve performance and achieve a real-time visual fidelity previously impossible in games. By adjusting the rate at which portions of the screen are shaded, the technology reduces the work the GPU has to do, which
boosts performance without denigrating image quality.

Dual Screens and Overclocks – Our Favourite Laptops From Computex 2019

Computex 2019 is on, and it’s time to show some love for laptops. We’ve seen our fair share of amazing, innovative and weird designs over the years, and you’ll be happy to know that the tradition is alive here as well. Without further ado, here are our favourite laptops revealed at Computex 2019.

Intel Honeycomb Glacier Dual Screen Laptop

Why have one screen in your laptop, when you can have two?

This seems to be Intel’s philosophy behind the Honeycomb Glacier Gaming laptop. In addition to a 15.6-inch 1080p display, it has a secondary 12-inch 720p display hinged with the primary one. When you lift the screen, it automatically pulls the secondary display into place, propped at any angle you feel comfortable.

The Honeycomb Glacier is supposed to cater to people who rely heavily on dual screen setups, including streamers who need to focus on the game on screen and monitor the chat on the other.

It is just a concept model, with a GTX 1070, 32 gigs of RAM and an unnamed 8-core CPU, but maybe someday we may actually get to see a proper version in the market.

ASUS Zenbook Pro Duo

Now, ASUS isn’t going to be left behind when it comes to dual screen laptops.

The company announced the Zenbook Pro Duo, a 15.6-inch notebook with two 4K screens: One 4K OLED primary 15.6-inch display and a 4K ScreenPad Plus.

You can drag any window from the primary to the secondary screen, and even use it as an extension of the primary display.

On the inside, it packs a 9th gen Intel Core i9 processor and an RTX 2060, making sure you get a smooth experience. There is a 14-inch version as well, which replaces the 4K screens with 1080p ones, and a Core i7 along with an NVIDIA MX250 GPU.

MSI GT76 Titan

While ASUS and Intel are putting in more screens, MSI’s been busy beefing up it’s single screen laptops. At Computex, the company revealed

the MSI GT76 Titan, a monster laptop with a full Core i9-9900K desktop processor, capable of sustaining a stable  5 GHz overclock over extensive time periods. Naturally, it is quite a beefy piece of hardware, weighing about 4.5 kilos. But on the inside it packs quite a punch. The 9900K is coupled with an RTX 2080 and supports upto 128 gigs of DDR4 memory. It also features an 11 pipe, quad fan cooling system that apparently took MSI four years to design. Needless to say, this is going to cost quite a lot, with a starting price point of $3600.

Alienware m15 and m17

Alienware has decided to redesign their m15 and m17 laptops from the ground up, and I gotta say, I dig it.

The new models are inspired by the legend design from the Alienware Area 51m we saw during CES 2019.  They are made from a magnesium alloy, making them sturdy yet lightweight. Display options range from 240 Hz to 4K OLED panels. Other than, it seems business as usual, with laptops being updated to the latest 9th gen Intel processors and NVIDIA’s GTX 16 series and RTX 20 series laptops.

Computex Day 1 Highlights

Computex kicked off with a bang yesterday, and you know what that means. We have a host of new product announcements to talk about. So, without wasting any time, let’s dive into the biggest announcements from Day 1 at Computex 2019.

Ryzen 3000

First up, we have the Ryzen 3000 series processors from the red team. We’ve known about them for a while, but now they’re finally here. Based on the Zen 2 architecture, the Ryzen 3000 is the first 7nm range of CPUs from AMD.

At the top of the line up, we have the flagship Ryzen 9 3900X with 12 cores and 24 threads, priced at $499. The 3900X has a base clock speed of 3.8 GHz and boosts up to 4.6 GHz.

Below that, we have the 8 core/16 thread Ryzen 7 3800X and Ryz en 7 3700X, priced at $399 and $329 respectively.  To bring home the line-up, there are the Ryzen 5 3600X and the 3600 with 6 cores and 12 threads.

AMD’s strong point here is definitely the affordable price point.  To put things in perspective, here’s a little fun fact.

The 12 core Intel Core i9 9920X costs $1199, more than double the price of  the 3900X.

Combine that with the company’s claim of a 15% IPC improvement with the Zen 2 architecture, and we can definitely expect to see an increase in AMD’s market share.

AMD Navi RX 5000 GPUs

Next up, from team red again, we have the 7nm Navi RX 5000 graphics cards. There have been a lot of rumours about Navi, especially regarding the branding. And now, AMD has finally put those rumours to rest. The cards will be branded as the RX 5000 series, most likely inspired by the company’s recent 50th anniversary.

With Navi, AMD is moving on from the GCN architecture we’ve seen in older cards to the new RDNA architecture.

According to AMD, it offers a 1.25x increase in performance per clock and 1.5x increase in performance per watt compared to the older architecutre.

On stage, AMD CEO Lisa Su showed the RX 5700 running the Strange Brigade benchmark against NVIDIA’s RTX 2070, where the RX 5700 came ahead by about 10%. As of now, there is no news about pricing, and AMD’s is expected to reveal more information at E3 during the company’s “Next Horizon Gaming” livestream.

X570 Chipset will not support first gen Ryzen

Amongst the good stuff, we also have some bad news from AMD. The new X570 chipset will not be completely backwards compatible, as it doesn’t support first gen Ryzen processors. Additionally, you won’t be able to use a Ryzen 3000 series CPU on all X370 and B350 motherboards, as support will vary depending on the brand and the model.

This sure seems to put a dent into AMD’s plan to support all Ryzen processors on the AM4 socket, but ultimately there are limitations in the BIOS chip capacity for older boards.

Still, not all is lost because there are plenty of 400 series motherboards available in the market that will support the Ryzen 3000 processors.

Intel Core i9 9900KS

Just because AMD had so many new things to share at Computex, it doesn’t mean that Intel didn’t have anything up their sleeves. The blue team unveiled the Core i9 9900KS, a 8 core/16 thread beast capable of boosting up to 5 GHz on all cores. That’s a 300 Mhz increase over the 9900K which boosts up to 4.7 GHz on all cores. The 9900KS also has a higher base clock speed, 4.0 GHz over the 9900K’s 3.6 GHz.

Other than that, they’re basically the same chip, based on the 14nm++ Coffee Lake architecture. Pricing and power draw still haven’t been revealed, so stay tuned for more updates.
