Red Dead Redemption 2 PC: Even More Hints that it’s Coming Soon

The Red Dead Redemption 2 PC version is much awaited especially since we keep getting small tidbits of information that point to the existence of it. And to keep that trend going, we’ve got some more information that points to the existence of a PC version thanks to the Red Dead Redemption 2 Companion App.

Over on gtaforums, user Fun 2 posted files from the companion app which seem to be for Red Dead Redemption 2. While it was initially dismissed as being just leftover settings from GTA V, user Spider-Vice later pointed out that this was in fact, something new.

The files reference DirectX 12, Microsoft’s new API that is not in GTA V. Another change seems to be certain settings being changed from a toggle to a slider, as the Refresh Rate setting is now a slider which will allow you to set a specific Refresh Rate.

There’s also a new “Ultra” setting for almost all graphics settings. Things like the Rockstar Editor have also been integrated into the menu now. There’s even a separate option for Soft Shadows while NVIDIA PCSS makes a return. No sign of DXR in the settings yet so maybe that’s work-in-progress because we feel that since GTA titles have usually had Nvidia specific settings in the past and have also partnered with them, DXR is going to be in the PC version of the game.

A surprising find is these files is that the RAGE engine is now compatible with iOS and Android. The Companion App itself was compiled in RAGE but now it seems like if they were to make a game for the mobile platforms, they can use RAGE to do so. Maybe we can expect some sort of mobile game in the future or maybe it’s just to run the companion app.

The mention in the Social Club site, the older mention in the Companion app and now this new information seem to strongly suggest that Red Dead Redemption 2 for PC is happening and we won’t get robbed off of a PC experience like Red Dead Redemption 1. I expect either an October 2019 or a Spring 2020 release for the PC version.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Coming Soon on PC?

Rockstar’s latest title, Red Dead Redemption 2 has been out on consoles for more than half a year now with no sign of a PC version besides a couple of rumours and leaks. However, the PC announcement and release might be coming soon thanks to a bit of information from Rockstar themselves(kind-off).

Spotted by Twitter user JakoMako51, the Rockstar Social Club site has a mention of “RDR2_PC_Accomplishments”. This could be a reference to the Achievements/Trophies that are in most games which could mean that Red Dead Redemption 2 is most likely going to be announced soon if PC stands for Personal Computer.

PC here could also stand for Player Character as next set of code is “RDR2_PS4_Trophies” while a reference to Xbox’s Achievements is a couple of lines below and not right after PS4. However, the Xbox string does not have any reference to  “RDR2_PC_Accomplishments” and the word “PC” itself only appears twice in the whole source code.

So if you ask me, I do think it is the PC version of the game being referenced and not the Player Character since there’s also a reference to the main character of the game, Arthur in the source code.

Red Dead Redemption 2 should be coming to PC soon since GTA V released about 5 months after the Xbox One and PS4 Release. It has been 9 months since Red Dead Redemption 2 released on consoles and we’re nearing the one year release anniversary of the game so maybe we’ll get an announcement around Gamescom and then a release on the one year anniversary of the game.

Link to the Source Code, Search in PC to find the string.

Red Dead Redemption 2 PC Version Hinted In Companion App

Red Dead Redemption 2’s chances of coming to PC seem to be higher than usual thanks to hints in the Companion app.

Thanks to BlackScout who dug around the code for the Red Dead Redemption 2 Companion App which led to them finding a bunch of strings which refer to various options that are usually found on PC titles, and are also found in GTA V. Here’s a few of the concrete ones that hint at the existence of an upcoming PC version:

The most interesting parameters are so:
PARAM_FrameLimit – A framelimiter.
PARAM_DX11Use8BitTargets – Probably due to Xbox One.
PARAM_HDStreamingInFlight – Present in GTA V (PC)
PARAM_Oculus
PARAM_companionAutoConnectIpDurango
PARAM_companionAutoConnectIpOrbis
PARAM_companionAutoConnectIpPC
PARAM_singleThreadedRenderer
PostFX::g_CheckerBoardEnable

Here is more evidence:
CommandIsPcVersion(void)    000000000166A12C

There may also be a PC version of the companion app:
SIGNIN_ANDROID_APP_URL    0000000002A866D0
SIGNIN_IOS_APP_URL    0000000002A9C890
SIGNIN_PC_APP_URL    0000000002A51F58

There are even more parameters, some of which refer to various visual settings like SSAO, Motion Blur, Depth of Field, HDR, Anisotropic Filtering levels, Reflection Quality, Shadow Quality and such. The game will also feature “Advanced Graphics” just like GTA V did as seen from the Parameter list. Another interesting find is that unlike the GTA V companion app which was only available on iOS and Android, The Red Dead Redemption 2 Companion App could also come with a PC version.

I can see it being used by people who have a dual monitor setup or more and if you play on Borderless Fullscreen Mode. This PC Companion App will most probably come after the game’s announcement for PC which we can estimate to be sometimes next year hopefully.  The full Parameter list is available at Rockstar Intel which we suggest going through because it has a lot of information which points towards a PC version.

Red Dead Redemption 2 Coming to PC in 2019?

A retailer in Europe has listed Red Dead Redemption 2 to release for PC in 2019. Let’s take a look at how this is probably just a false alarm though.

MediaMarkt, one of Europe’s largest retailers for electronics listed Red Dead Redemption 2 for a PC with a release date of 31st December 2019. That’s a bit off an odd date to release a game and is usually what retailers set as a placeholder date.

That does not mean that the game won’t come out on PC though because earlier in June VG247 had found that a programmer for Rockstar listed Red Dead Redemption 2 in their LinkedIn resume which they later changed probably because of the attention that it got. Rockstar did something similar with GTA V where they released the PC version after the game released on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One so we can imagine they will probably do something similar for Red Dead Redemption 2.
